Burst pipes can happen for a number of reasons, including:
Older homes can be particularly vulnerable to leaking or burst pipes as underground water lines and internal plumbing systems wear out over time.
Our team will assess the issue, identify the source of the leak, and recommend the best repair solution. In some cases we can repair the damaged section, while other situations may require pipe replacement or a new watermain installation.
Not all burst pipes are obvious. Some leaks can occur underground or behind walls before major damage becomes visible.
Common signs include:
If you notice any of these signs, it’s important to act quickly before the damage worsens.
While waiting for Matthews Plumbing and Gasfitting to arrive, there are a few important steps you can take to reduce damage to your home.
Turn Your Water Off
The first step is to shut off your mains water supply to stop more water escaping.
Your toby or isolation valve is usually located near the front boundary of your property under a small plastic cover. Turning this valve off can help prevent flooding and protect your home from further damage.
If you use tank water or a pump system, switch the pump off and isolate the water supply where possible.
Drain The Remaining Water
Once the water supply has been turned off, open both hot and cold taps around the house to release pressure and drain any remaining water from the pipes.
This can help reduce further leaking and minimise water damage.
Stay Safe
If water is near electrical fittings, appliances, or power points, turn the electricity off at the mains if it is safe to do so.
Use towels or buckets to contain excess water until help arrives.
